Summer Fun- Water Time!

This summer flew by and as I write this we are well on our way to winter. This summer was busy and fun and I would be sad if I didn’t write some of my favorite memoires. I decided the best way to do it is to break it up in a few difference blogs. The first one is all about my fun in the sun and water.

I have always loved the water and some of my favorite summer memories seem to involve water of some type. This summer was no different. Years ago (fresh out of high school) our church did a youth activity where we floated down the main part of the Payette River. I LOVED it but the closet I came to do anything like that again was floating down the Boise River which isn’t the same thing. This summer I finally was able to raft the river again with some good friends. My friend Mike and his wife Kim do a lot of rafting and even own their own raft. They invited me to raft the Payette River with them and I jumped at the chance. My good friend Jeff and I drove up to meet them in July.

We rafted the main part of the Payette River and the weather could not have been better. The rapids were big enough to be exciting but not overwhelming. The water was cold and refreshing.

I felt myself relax and soak in everything nature had to offer during the calm parts on the river. The afternoon was just what I needed and I know without a doubt something I want to do more of.

A few weeks later my BFF Jennifer invited me to raft the South Fork of the Payette River with her and her family.

I have never been on the South Fork so I was excited. We went rafting with the Payette River Company. I have to say our guide wasn’t bad looking.

It was another fun afternoon and I have to say if I wasn’t hooked before I defiantly was after that.

DSCF0065

The rapids were a little more heart pounding and at times I was thankful for my helmet. I am proud to say all of us stayed in the raft (a raft behind us wasn’t as lucky) and worked together as a good team.

A big thanks to Jennifer and her family for letting me tag alone with them!!

This summer I also learned how to kayak! To start out with my dad had me practice in his pool. I have to say is didn’t start well. Within a few seconds of getting in the kayak I ended up upside down in the pool. After that things got better but it took a little bit to find my balance.

IMG_4989

I finally started to feel more confident and after another evening of practicing I felt ready to try it on open water. Our adventure on open water was to help lifeguard for Emmett’s triathlon, no pressure right LOL. We spent a couple of hours and I ended up really liking it. Thanks dad for teaching me and letting me tag along!

Hot!

The official start of summer is here and with it Mother Nature is giving us a week straight of temperatures in the hundreds, yuck! I love summer and I love being outside but when we hit 100’s that is just too hot!

IMG_4434

With the high temps it means trying to find things to do to stay cool. Yesterday I meet up with my mom, my sister, and the kids at Eagle Island State Park. The kids loved the water and it brought back memories of when we would go as kids.

Thor

The last year I have thought a lot about getting a puppy but wasn’t sure if the timing was right. It was nice having Molly trained and adjusted well to my schedule.

IMG_3512

She does great when I am gone at work and she is easy to take on walks.

IMG_3848

Then this fall she started to have more problems with one of her back knees. It wasn’t bad but was starting to be more noticeable. Then this spring while playing fetch in the backyard she cut sharp and let out a loud yelp. The end result was she torn her ACL in her good back knee.

IMG_3114

IMG_2975

While she is doing much better now she still isn’t able to go on runs or hikes. She can go on walks but only short ones. With both bad knees now it is more of a waiting game which breaks my heart. After a lot of thought I decided now was the time to get a puppy. That way Molly could have a friend, she could help train it, and whenever she gets to the point where the pain is too much (which I hope and pray isn’t for a long time!) I won’t have to be alone. For awhile now I have been in love with the German Shepherd and knew I wanted one. My brother Jeff has a friend who breeds amazing German Shepherds and so I decided I wanted to get one from her.

On March 24th Thor was born. I was lucky enough to be able to go and see him a couple times before bringing him home and feel in love.

IMG_3555

The first night as predicted was ROUGH! I knew I wanted him kennel trained and set up the kennel in my room next to Molly’s bed. He cried, howled, barked and kept me up almost the whole night. It took a couple nights but now he is doing really well in his kennel! The past month has flown by. Him and Molly do really well together.

Having a puppy doesn’t come without challenges. The biggest for me has been his nipping. He has to nip and bite everything including people! It is slowly getting better but still a work in progress. Over all though he is a good puppy and I love him like crazy!!

Flowers

One of my favorite parts of spring is to plant flowers. I love all the bright colors and watching my flowers bed grown each year. It is also fun to see what comes back from the year before. Each year gets better and better too! It is hard work but so worth it. Enjoy!

5K

This year I am working on getting healthy. I have been wanting and trying off and on for years to lose weight but usually after 10 lbs or so I either get board or frustrated and would fall back into my old ways. Last fall I had some health concerns and I decided enough was enough and it was time to get my life back.

go!

I was told by my doctor that due to my heart it was best to lose the weight slowly without using any fad diets or pills. It was all about watching what I eat and getting off my butt and moving. My friend Lisa challenged me to run a half marathon with her and while I have never been a runner I accepted the challenge.

run 1

My first challenge was a 5K (the Race for the Cure) this May. I downloaded the Couch to 5K app for my phone and went to work. It was anything but easy.

IMG_2898

Some days I could feel every extra pound that I was carrying around. Other days it took everything I had just to get myself out the door. But I did it. It was slow and not pretty but I did it.

IMG_3253

May 9th was here before and I was excited to see what I could do. My best friend Jennifer signed up to do the race with me and I loved having her alongside me.

IMG_3532

The 5K was fun and I was able to run/fast walk my best time yet! My average per mile was 14.38, 14:32, and 14:36, not bad for an overweight girl!

IMG_3533

I am now down 30lbs and am excited to see what this summer will bring.

Run

My next challenge will be a 10K in September, bring it!!

2014

The year in review is one of my favorite blogs to write because I love looking back on the year.  20114 was a good one!  It is full of good memories and a few heartbreaks.  Its a year I grew in ways I never thought I needed.  It was a year full of friends and family.

(Warning, overload of pictures coming… but if you know me that is how I roll!)

2014 I tried to be as a good aunt and get in as much aunt time as I could.  These kids are growing so fast!

Fitness Challenge

At work we had another fitness Challenge.  This year I decided to complete 30 hrs or cardio in 10 weeks.  I also want to keep it going so I challenged myself to complete 150 miles by Christmas.  If felt good to be doing something again!

IMG_2199

The weather change from hot, to perfect, to freezing and had everything from sunny days to rain.   I loved watching the leaves change and just being outside.

IMG_2190

Molly loved it just as much, if not more.  My best day for miles completed in one day was 6.31 miles with 1.8 miles being the least.

IMG_2023

(me up to 3 miles)

IMG_2041

(me up to 4 miles)

IMG_2110

(me at 5 miles!)

IMG_2396

My fastest time was 13:59 mins a mile, not bad for a fast walk!  At one point I was on the leader board at work for top ten on most miles complete. I completed goal #1 and finished with 31 hrs completed in 10 weeks.

IMG_2171

I would love to say that I complete the 150 miles by Christmas but I came up 20 miles short.  130 miles is still really good and I am proud of what I completed!

IMG_2402

Not bad for a girl who is over 100 lbs overweight!  During the challenge a good friend of my challenged me to complete a half marathon by the fall of 2015!  It seems crazy but I know I can do it!  I just need to dig down deep and get it done!  So my half marathon will be Sept 26!  To get ready for it I will be doing a 5k this spring, a 10k this Summer and then the half this fall!  I am excited, scared and ready!  2015 is my year.
